Write to Government - Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site

Please ask the new Labour government to stand up for Stonehenge and save, at the very least, £2.5bn.

Below is a sample letter which you can edit (using your own words is more effective) and send directly to the Cabinet Minister, The Right Honourable Pat McFadden MP, copied to Darren Jones MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Pat McFadden has recently called for a review of low value infrastructure.

WRITE TO UK GOVERNMENT

Dear Pat McFadden,

Congratulations on your election victory earlier this month.  We have every sympathy with the terrible economic situation that your government has inherited. As a result you are quite rightly reviewing large infrastructure schemes started under the previous government. Many road schemes it progressed offer low value for money and in the case of  the £2.5bn A303 Stonehenge road and tunnel scheme it will cost far more than it will ever deliver in economic benefits.  It neither protects the World Heritage Site nor makes any economic sense.  But the funding, if invested in a different way, could contribute significantly to Labour's rail and bus plans and much else besides.

The current economic analysis has been provided by National Highways. It still maintains the road would benefit the World Heritage Site, when UNESCO, 5 planning inspectors and even two Conservative Secretaries of State disagree. In short its figures cannot be trusted, not least as the only way it can make the scheme appear in the black is to include nearly £1 billion of heritage benefits that don't exist.

With UNESCO likely to place the site on the List of World Heritage in Danger, due to the damaging impacts of the scheme, if Labour is to deliver on its promises to restore our international standing it should take decisive action and scrap this road now.

It would be a hugely popular move with nearly a quarter of a million people from around the world (from 147 countries) having signed a petition against the scheme.   
I urge you to do everything within in your powers to scrap this road scheme and free up valuable resources to support growth and improving opportunities .
