Historian opposes tunnel plan

Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site Posted on March 22, 2015 by Stonehenge AllianceFebruary 25, 2017

Tom Holland, author, historian and broadcaster, visits Stonehenge and invites you to protect the World Heritage Site and sign our petition.

Please sign the petition & share!

The Government plans to spend £2 billion widening the A303 to the South West. This road crosses the iconic Stonehenge World Heritage Site (WHS), considered “the most archaeologically significant land surface in Europe” and agreed by UNESCO to be “without parallel”. The WHS, revered by over 100 generations of our ancestors, extends beyond the horizons around the Stones and holds many secrets yet to be discovered.

The Government wants to put the A303 in a 2.9km tunnel where it passes the Stones. While this sounds good, it would result in tunnel cuttings and at least 1.6km of new dual carriageway within the WHS, causing massive destruction of archaeology.

If A303 widening at Stonehenge is felt to be essential it should be done by means of a deep bored tunnel at least 4.5km long. Anything shorter would cause irreparable damage to this landscape, in breach of the World Heritage Convention.
